COLORADO STUDENTS TAKE HOME AWARDS AT THE INTEL INTERNATIONAL SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING FAIR

Colorado students from around the state were among the awards winners at the 60th Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) held in Reno, NV May 10 - 15, 2009. Below is a listing of the award winners and their hometowns.

The Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF), the world's largest pre-college science fair, brings together more than 1,500 of the most curious and capable young science pioneers from more than 50 countries to share ideas, showcase cutting-edge science and compete for over $4 million in awards and scholarships. The Intel ISEF is the world's only international science fair representing all sciences for students in grades 9 through 12. The ISEF has been coordinated for 60 years by Society for Science & the Public (formerly Science Service), one of the most respected nonprofit organizations advancing the cause of science. In its thirteenth year as the title sponsor, Intel Corporation has committed millions to developing and promoting this competition. In addition, each year a volunteer committee representing the host community raises thousands of dollars to provide the exhibit space, support the hundreds of judges, and provide for special events that are held throughout the week-long event. Grand (Place) Awards:

Katlin Hornig from Alamosa, CO won $3,000 (1st Place) in Behavioral & Social Sciences. Katlin took 1st Place in Behavioral & Social Sciences at CSEF.

Jesse Ellison from Bayfield, CO won $1,500 (2nd Place) in Electrical & Mechanical Engineering. Jesse took 2nd in Engineering at CSEF.

Connie Liu from Aurora, CO won $1,000 (3rd Place) in Cellular & Molecular Biology. Connie took 3rd Place in Medicine & Health at CSEF.

David Wu from Aurora, CO won $1,000 (3rd Place) in Energy & Transportation. David took 1st in Environmental Sciences and was the 1st Place Best Individual Project winner at CSEF.

Kelli Lynch from Fort Collins, CO won $1,000 (3rd Place) in Microbiology. Kelli took 1st in Microbiology and was the 2nd Place Best Individual Project winner at CSEF.

Ethan Hahn from Colorado Springs, CO won $1,000 (3rd Place) in Engineering: Materials & Bioengineering. Ethan took 1st in Engineering at CSEF.

Tonya Pavlenko & Laura Gudvangen from Colorado Springs, CO won $1,000 (3rd Place) in the Team Category. Tonya and Laura were 2nd Place Best Team Project winners at CSEF.

Tanya Petach from Boulder, CO won $500 (4th Place) in Earth & Planetary Sciences. Tanya took 1st in Earth & Space Sciences at CSEF.

Cole Kembel from Brush, CO won $500 (4th Place) in Electrical & Mechanical Engineering. Cole took Honorable Mention in Engineering at CSEF.

Forrest Pieper & Matthew Bull from Nederland, CO won $500 (4th place) in the Team Category.

Special & Government Awards:

Katlin Hornig from Alamosa, CO won an $8,000 scholarship from the Office of Naval Research on behalf of the United States Navy and Marine Corps.

Tanya Petach from Boulder, CO won an $8,000 scholarship from the Office of Naval Research on behalf of the United States Navy and Marine Corps.

Jesse Ellison from Bayfield, CO won $3,000 (1st Place) from the United States Air Force.

Aarthi Shankar from Colorado Springs, CO won $1,500 (2nd Place) from the United States Air Force.

Kelli Lynch from Fort Collins, CO won $250 (5th Place) and a one-year subscription to Microbe from the American Society for Microbiology.
